Scope and objectives INTERCARTO - 6 International Conference to be held in Apatity, Russia, on August 22-24, is intended as an important step forward to solve one of the most actual problems of modern geographical and ecological disciplines - development and application of geographical information systems as an effective tool of providing rational nature management and creating conditions for sustainable development of territories. It will be the sixth conference, after INTERCARTO - 5 hold in Yakutsk. The main purpose of the Conference is to assess the present state of development of GIS-technologies, digital mapping and special geo-information systems for various territories. It is supposed to discuss pure and applied aspects of GIS working out, experience of leading scientists and experts in elaboration of environmental GIS. A special attention will be paid to GIS usage for solving problems of sustainable development of different territories.

Call for Papers Papers submitted for publishing in the Conference materials should be written in English and/ or Russian and signed by all authors. Titles and abstracts of papers in Russian should have obligatory English translation. Authors should submit 2 copies of their papers (up to 12 pages typed one and a half spaced including figures and tables) to the Organizing Committee not later than April 15, 2000 by regular mail. At the same time Secretary of the Organizing Committee would like to ask authors to drop via e-mail electronic manuscripts prepared in MS Word for Windows 6.0 (or 7.0). There is desirable compression of prepared files using ARJ.EXE or PKZIP.EXE.

Registration fee The registration fee for participation in the four-day Conference will be the following:
US $ 20 - for the CIS participants;
US $ 100 - for foreign participants

Fee is to be paid in rubles according to the Central Bank rate at the moment of payment. It covers provision of all participants with Conference materials and refreshments during session breaks.

Forms of payment

cash on registering (with the issue of the receipt confirming the registration fee payment);
bank transfer to the settlement account (on registering you may need to confirm the payment by the copy of the document).
Languages The official languages of the conference are English and Russian; in principal, simultaneous interpretation will be provided. To facilitate simultaneous interpretation and make it better speakers are requested to supply the texts of their papers to the representative of the Organizing Committee on arrival to Apatity.
Related activity Within the Conference there is due to be organized the Exhibition of software, equipment, digital maps and technologies, goods and consulting services on Conference topics. Administrative, industrial, commercial, consulting and professional organizations and companies interested in presentation of their goods and services at the Exhibition are encouraged to apply to the Organizing Committee to get information on participation conditions.
Venue Apatity, the host place of the Conference, is one of the large cities in the Murmansk region. It is situated near the unique Khibiny mountains - the storehouse of minerals. The city of Apatity is the geographical Centre of the Murmansk region, the crossroad of surface and air ways. It has the huge technical-scientific and educational potential, is featured by the high level of cultural atmosphere. Here there are located 9 Institutions of the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, branches of two Universities, held cultural and sports events at the regional and international level.

Plenary sessions of the Conference as well as the Workshop and Exhibition will be held in halls and rooms of the Kola Science Centre RAS. Accommodation will be provided at the comfortable country house "The House of Scientists" and the "Imandra" hotel at the Imandra lake, 12 km far from Apatity.

Transportation

The organizing Committee is planning to meet the Conference participants at the Murmansk and Apatity airports as well to transport them to Apatity by bus. Timetable of aero-and railway transport from Moscow and St. Petersburg will be submitted later.

Weather

The maximum average August temperature in Apatity is 16,0 °Ñ, the minimum one - 7,3 °Ñ; the average monthly precipitation rate is 65 mm. Day temperatures in the beginning of the month are expected to be about 14,0 °Ñ; night and morning temperatures - about 9-10 °Ñ. There are also possible short-term thunderstorms.
